Common Interview Questions for Database Administrators

Database Interview Questions

Database interview questions typically cover topics like database management systems, relational database concepts, normalization, SQL queries, indexing, transactions, database design, and performance tuning. Interviewers may also ask about your experience with popular database systems like MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL. Be prepared to discuss your previous database projects, problem-solving skills, and ability to optimize database performance while maintaining data integrity and security. Familiarize yourself with common database-related scenarios and be ready to explain how you would handle them using your knowledge and experience.

1 - Explain what is a database: A database is a collection of data that is organized in a structured way to enable easy retrieval, manipulation, and storage of information. It typically consists of tables, columns, rows, and relationships between data entities.

2) What is the difference between SQL and NoSQL databases? SQL databases are relational databases that use structured query language for defining and manipulating data. NoSQL databases, on the other hand, are non relational databases that do not require a fixed schema and are used for large distributed data sets.

3) What are primary keys and foreign keys? A primary key is a unique identifier for a record in a table and ensures that each row in a table is uniquely identified. A foreign key is a field in a table that links to the primary key in another table, establishing a relationship between the two tables.

4) What is normalization in databases? Normalization is the process of organizing data in a database efficiently to reduce redundancy and dependency. It involves breaking down large tables into smaller ones and defining relationships between them to minimize duplication of data.

5) What are the different types of joins in SQL? There are several types of joins in SQL, including INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN, RIGHT JOIN, and FULL JOIN. Each type of join allows you to retrieve data from multiple tables based on a specified relationship between them.

6) Explain ACID properties in database transactions. ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) properties ensure the reliability and consistency of database transactions. Atomicity ensures that all operations in a transaction are completed successfully, Consistency maintains the integrity of data, Isolation ensures that concurrent transactions do not interfere with each other, and Durability guarantees that changes made to the database are permanently saved even in the event of a system failure.

7) What is indexing in databases? Indexing is the process of creating an index on a table to facilitate quick retrieval of data based on certain columns. It helps improve query performance by reducing the time it takes to search for specific data in a large table.

8) What is a stored procedure? A stored procedure is a precompiled set of SQL statements that are stored in the database and can be called multiple times. It helps reduce network traffic and improves performance by executing a group of SQL commands with a single call to the database.

9) Explain the difference between clustered and non clustered indexes. A clustered index determines the physical order of data in a table, so the rows are stored in the same order as the index. A non clustered index is a separate data structure that points to the actual data rows, allowing for faster retrieval of data but not affecting the physical order of the table.

10) What is data normalization? Data normalization is the process of organizing data in a database in such a way that redundancy is minimized and data integrity is preserved. This involves breaking down data into smaller, more manageable tables and defining relationships between them to ensure data consistency and reduce data redundancy.
