Difference Between List Set And Map In Java

In Java, a list is an ordered collection of elements that allows duplicates, a set is a collection that does not allow duplicates and does not maintain order, and a map is a collection of key-value pairs. Lists are typically accessed by index, sets are used to ensure uniqueness of elements, and maps are used for key-value lookups. Each type has a specific use case depending on the requirements of the data structure.

1 - List:

In Java, a List is an ordered collection that allows duplicate elements. Elements in a List are accessed by their index.

Lists in Java are usually implemented using ArrayList, LinkedList, or Vector classes.

Common operations on a List include adding elements, removing elements, and retrieving elements by their index.

Lists are suitable when the order of elements needs to be preserved and duplicates are allowed.

2) Set:

A Set in Java is a collection that does not allow duplicate elements. It enforces uniqueness of elements.

Sets in Java are commonly implemented using HashSet, TreeSet, or LinkedHashSet classes.

Operations on a Set usually involve adding elements, checking for presence of an element, and removing elements.

Sets are useful when dealing with collections of unique elements where order is not important.

3) Map:

In Java, a Map is a collection that maps keys to values. Each key in a Map is unique and associated with a single value.

Maps in Java are typically implemented using HashMap, TreeMap, or LinkedHashMap classes.

Common operations on a Map involve adding key value pairs, retrieving values using keys, and checking for the presence of a key.

Maps are suitable for scenarios where data is stored as key value pairs and quick lookups by keys are required.
