Difference Between Final And Finally In Java

In Java, “final” is a keyword that can be used to declare a constant value that cannot be changed once it is assigned a value. It can be applied to variables, methods, and classes. On the other hand, “finally” is a block of code that follows a try-catch block in exception handling. The code inside the finally block will always be executed whether an exception is thrown or not. In summary, “final” is used for declaring constants, while “finally” is used in exception handling to ensure certain code is always executed.

1 - ‘final’ keyword in Java:

‘final’ is a keyword in Java that is used to signify that a certain entity, whether it be a variable, method, or class, cannot be changed or overridden.

When a variable is declared as ‘final’, its value cannot be altered once initialized.

When a method is declared as ‘final’, it means that it cannot be overridden by any subclass.

When a class is declared as ‘final’, it means that it cannot be subclassed, i.e., it cannot be extended further.

2) ‘finally’ block in Java:

‘finally’ is a block in Java that is used to execute important code such as releasing resources or closing connections, whether an exception is thrown or not.

The ‘finally’ block follows a try catch block and guarantees that the code within it will always be executed, even if an exception is thrown within the try block.

It is typically used to clean up resources that were opened in the try block, ensuring that they are properly released regardless of whether an exception occurred or not.

3) Differences:

‘final’ is a keyword used to declare constants or entities that cannot be modified, whereas ‘finally’ is a block used to ensure cleanup actions are performed regardless of exceptions.

‘final’ is used in variable declaration or method/class definition, limiting their modification or inheritance, while ‘finally’ is a block used alongside try catch blocks.

‘final’ is utilized during design time to define immutability, while ‘finally’ is for handling runtime scenarios to ensure resource cleanup.

‘final’ is about restricting changes to values or preventing inheritance, while ‘finally’ is about ensuring certain code executes after try catch blocks, irrespective of exceptions.
